Four Years Down the Drain

by Brian Hoover

(Written to show an athletes perspective from Freshman year to Senior year. )

KEY:  Freshman Year

KEY: Senior Year

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wrestling is about to begin

Wrestling is about to begin

Knees shaking, as I walk up the stairs

Rage building as I walk up the stairs

I must work harder; my brother is watching me

No one is watching; time to slack

No one expects much out of me

No one expects much out of me

I will prove them wrong

Is it too late to prove them wrong?

This will make me better for next year

This is my last year

I have improved so much this year

Have I improved at all?

I have a goal

I have a goal

To wrestle varsity

To wrestle varsity

I will do what it takes to get to my goal

I didn’t do what it took to reach my goal

My first match is about to begin

Another match is about to begin

Pin in 25 seconds

Pin in 1 minute and 20 seconds

I lost

Victory

It is OK, I will win my next match

Who cares, it was a JV match

Lose, lose, lose

Win, lose, win

Why can’t I win?

I shouldn’t lose to underclassmen

Wrestle offs

Wrestle offs

I have no chance of beating Chris Horne

I will beat this freshman

I lost

Stupid

It’s OK, he desrves to win

How could I have lost?

Maybe next time

I don’t want there to be a next time, I quit

I have to work harder

Why work harder?

I will never quit

Coach, I want to quit

I will always improve if I work hard

I am an asset, he said

I like wrestling

Why am I here?

I will learn a lot of things in this sport

I have learned a lot of things in this sport

Don’t quit when you are faced with a challenge

I am now able to work through any challenge life will throw

That is why I put my body through this pain

Nothing will compare to the mental state needed for wrestling

Will I ever be successful?

I was successful

I just hope I will get through this year

I am now able to take on the world

Why am I here?

I am here to be able to live on my own, no matter what happens in the end

Thanks coach, I finally see.
